Which city hosted the Constitutional Convention of 1787?

The story behind the answer

Philadelphia hosted the Constitutional Convention of 1787.

Delegates met in the Pennsylvania State House, now known as Independence Hall, from May 25 to September 17, 1787. Although the convention was initially called to revise the Articles of Confederation, the delegates ultimately produced an entirely new framework for the federal government.

George Washington presided over the convention. Fifty-five delegates attended at least some sessions, representing 12 states; Rhode Island did not send delegates. The final Constitution created a stronger national government with separate legislative, executive, and judicial branches.

Philadelphia was already a major political center and had hosted the Continental Congress during key years of the Revolution. The convention’s location is sometimes confused with the place where the Constitution was later ratified or where the first Congress met. The document was signed at the Pennsylvania State House on September 17, 1787, then submitted to the states for ratification. Philadelphia’s Independence Hall remains closely associated with both the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.
