Durban hosted the 2023 World Table Tennis Championships Finals.
The tournament took place in South Africa and was the first individual World Table Tennis Championships held on the African continent since 1939. Durban’s selection marked an important return to Africa for one of table tennis’s flagship events.
China’s Fan Zhendong won the men’s singles title, while Sun Yingsha won the women’s singles title. The finals featured singles and doubles events rather than the separate World Team Championships format.
Durban is sometimes confused with other South African cities that have hosted major sporting events, especially Johannesburg and Cape Town. The 2023 World Championships Finals were specifically staged at the Durban International Convention Centre.
