Montreal hosted the 1976 Summer Olympics, held during the United States Bicentennial year.
The Games took place in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, from July 17 to August 1, 1976. The United States had hoped to host the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles as part of its Bicentennial celebrations, but Montreal won the bid.
The 1976 Olympics therefore occurred during the anniversary year without being a U.S.-based Bicentennial event. Philadelphia hosted several major sporting events connected with the celebrations, but it did not host the Olympics.
Denver was initially awarded the 1976 Winter Olympics, but Colorado voters rejected public funding after concerns about cost and environmental impact. The Winter Games were subsequently moved to Innsbruck, Austria, while Montreal retained the Summer Games.
