Which federal law authorized special 2026 coin designs for the United States Semiquincentennial?

The story behind the answer

The Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020 authorized special 2026 coin designs for the United States Semiquincentennial.

The act gave the United States Mint authority to create special circulating designs for the semiquincentennial year. It authorized redesigns across six circulating denominations, including five quarter-dollar designs. The legislation also required one quarter to represent women’s contributions to American independence.

Design recommendations were reviewed by the Commission of Fine Arts and the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee. The Treasury secretary makes the final decisions on U.S. coin designs after considering those recommendations. The resulting program connected everyday currency with the 250th anniversary.

The law is easy to confuse with the earlier 2016 commission act. The 2016 law created the federal commission responsible for anniversary planning, while the 2020 coin-redesign law specifically supplied the authority for semiquincentennial coin designs.
