Which city hosted the 1876 Centennial Exposition, the major U.S. centennial event before America250?

The story behind the answer

Philadelphia hosted the 1876 Centennial Exposition, the major U.S. centennial event before America250.

Officially called the International Exhibition of Arts, Manufactures, and Products of the Soil and Mine, the exposition ran from May 10 to November 10, 1876. It celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, which had been approved in Philadelphia in 1776.

The fair occupied grounds in Fairmount Park and was the first official world’s fair held in the United States. Nearly 10 million visitors attended, and 37 countries participated. Exhibits showcased industry, agriculture, science, and technology, helping present the United States as a modern industrial nation.

Philadelphia’s role was not accidental. The city had hosted both Continental Congresses and the Constitutional Convention, and Independence Hall remained a powerful symbol of the founding era. The city also featured prominently in later national anniversaries, including the 1926 sesquicentennial and the 1976 bicentennial.
