Apollo 11 was the 1969 mission that first landed humans on the Moon.
NASA launched Apollo 11 from Kennedy Space Center in Florida on July 16, 1969. Astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins made up the crew. Armstrong and Aldrin descended to the lunar surface in the Lunar Module Eagle, while Collins remained in lunar orbit in the command module Columbia.
The lunar module landed in the Moon’s Sea of Tranquility on July 20, 1969. Armstrong became the first person to step onto the lunar surface, followed shortly by Aldrin. The astronauts collected lunar samples, conducted experiments, and returned safely to Earth on July 24.
Apollo 11 is sometimes confused with Apollo 8, which was the first crewed mission to orbit the Moon, or Apollo 10, which rehearsed the landing without touching down. Apollo 11 achieved the first crewed lunar landing.
