Philadelphia hosted the 1876 Centennial Exposition, the major 100th-anniversary event later recalled during America250 planning.
The exposition marked the centennial of the United States Declaration of Independence. Philadelphia was a natural location because the city had been a central meeting place during the American Revolution and was associated with the drafting and adoption of the Declaration.
The fair was held in Fairmount Park and displayed industrial, agricultural and cultural achievements from the United States and other countries. One famous surviving structure is Memorial Hall, which later became part of the Please Touch Museum. The exposition helped present the United States as an increasingly industrial and technologically ambitious nation.
Philadelphia also hosted the 1926 Sesquicentennial Exposition, marking 150 years of independence. That repeated connection helped make the city an important reference point in discussions about later anniversary observances. America250 planning continued the tradition of linking national commemorations with Philadelphia, although the 2026 celebration included events and programs across the country rather than centering on a single world’s fair.
