Which city hosted the 1605 state opening of Parliament targeted by the Gunpowder Plot?

The story behind the answer

London hosted the 1605 state opening of Parliament targeted by the Gunpowder Plot.

The conspirators focused on the royal and parliamentary centre at Westminster, then part of London. Their plan depended on the king, members of both Houses of Parliament and other leading figures gathering there for the state opening on 5 November.

Guy Fawkes’s discovery in a cellar beneath the House of Lords stopped the planned attack before the ceremony. The location explains why Bonfire Night is especially associated with Parliament, Westminster and London, even though celebrations now take place throughout Britain and in other countries.

York can appear in discussions of the story because Guy Fawkes was born there and attended St Peter’s School. That association is separate from the London location of the intended attack.
