Geneva has hosted the World Trade Organization’s headquarters since the WTO began operating.
The WTO is based at the Centre William Rappard in Geneva, Switzerland. The building previously housed the International Labour Organization and later became associated with the WTO and its predecessor, the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade. Geneva’s long history as a center for international diplomacy helped make it a natural home for the multilateral trading system.
The WTO’s headquarters supports negotiations, committee meetings, dispute-settlement work, research and administrative operations. It should not be confused with the organization’s ministerial conferences, which take place in different member economies. Geneva is also home to several other major international organizations, including the United Nations Office at Geneva and the World Intellectual Property Organization.
A common mix-up is to identify Brussels or Paris because those cities host important European and international economic institutions. The WTO, however, is headquartered in Geneva, while the World Trade Organization’s predecessor, GATT, also operated from Geneva.
