Austin became Tesla's corporate headquarters in 2021, as the electric-car company grew into a major market-cap leader.
Tesla shareholders approved the move from Palo Alto, California, to Austin, Texas, in October 2021. The company announced the change at its annual shareholder meeting held at Gigafactory Texas near Austin.
Tesla's Austin presence includes Gigafactory Texas, which produces vehicles including the Model Y and Cybertruck. The company also maintains major facilities elsewhere, including a vehicle factory in Fremont, California, and Gigafactories in Nevada, New York, Berlin, and Shanghai.
Palo Alto remains important in Tesla's history because the company was headquartered there for many years. Detroit is associated with traditional U.S. automakers, while Reno is near Tesla's Nevada battery plant, but neither is Tesla's corporate headquarters.
