Abiquiú became Georgia O'Keeffe's primary home after she moved to New Mexico in 1949.
O'Keeffe had visited New Mexico regularly since 1929 and painted its cliffs, adobe buildings, bones, and broad skies for many years. After Alfred Stieglitz died in 1946, she moved permanently to New Mexico in 1949. She eventually made Abiquiú her principal home and studio.
Her Abiquiú house, built around the remains of a Spanish hacienda, became a recurring subject in her work. The famous black door in its courtyard appears in several paintings. O'Keeffe also maintained a residence at Ghost Ranch, farther north near Abiquiú, and spent time in nearby communities. Santa Fe is closely connected with her legacy because the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum is there, but Abiquiú was her home.
