Which church in York is traditionally associated with Guy Fawkes’s baptism?

The story behind the answer

St Michael le Belfrey in York is traditionally associated with Guy Fawkes’s baptism.

The church stands beside York Minster in the centre of York. Parish records state that Guy Fawkes was baptised there on 16 April 1570, shortly after his birth. The record is one reason York remains central to his early biography and to local Bonfire Night history.

Fawkes’s father, Edward Fawkes, worked as a proctor and advocate in York, while his mother was Edith Jackson. After Edward’s death, Fawkes was raised in a household that later became connected with Catholicism. He eventually converted and left England to serve Catholic Spain.

Visitors sometimes name York Minster because it is the city’s best-known church and stands immediately beside St Michael le Belfrey. The two buildings are distinct. The baptismal connection belongs to St Michael le Belfrey, a parish church whose present structure dates largely from the eighteenth century.
