NVIDIA’s market value passed $1 trillion during trading on May 30, 2023, as investors rapidly increased their expectations for demand for its artificial-intelligence processors. It became one of the few public companies ever to reach that valuation.
The company began in 1993 as a graphics-chip designer. Its graphics processing units, or GPUs, later became important for machine learning because they can perform many calculations in parallel. NVIDIA’s CUDA software ecosystem also helped make its hardware widely useful to developers.
NVIDIA is often described as a chip company, but it designs processors and platforms rather than operating most of the factories that manufacture them. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company is among the important manufacturers involved in producing advanced chips for many designers.
