Nvidia briefly became the world’s most valuable company in June 2024 after its market capitalization exceeded US$3 trillion.
Nvidia’s rise was driven by demand for graphics-processing units used in artificial-intelligence training and inference. Its CUDA software ecosystem and data-center products made the company a central supplier for large-scale AI computing.
The company passed the three-trillion-dollar threshold after a sharp increase in its share price. It briefly moved ahead of Microsoft and Apple in global market-cap rankings before those positions changed again as share prices fluctuated.
Nvidia is often described as a chipmaker, but it primarily designs semiconductors and platforms while relying on manufacturing partners. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company produces many of Nvidia’s leading-edge chips, which is why the two companies are related but not interchangeable.
