Nvidia became the world’s most valuable publicly traded company by market capitalization in June 2024.
Nvidia briefly took the top position on June 18, 2024, as investors continued to price in extraordinary demand for its graphics processing units and related data-center systems. The company’s chips became central to training and running many artificial-intelligence models, making Nvidia a major beneficiary of the AI infrastructure boom.
Nvidia began as a graphics-chip company focused on computer gaming and professional visualization. Its CUDA software platform later made its hardware useful for general-purpose parallel computing, including machine learning. That combination of specialized processors and software helped distinguish Nvidia from many traditional semiconductor firms.
Market-capitalization rankings can change quickly because they depend on share prices. Nvidia’s position was therefore a market snapshot, not a permanent title. Apple and Microsoft also traded leadership positions during the same period.
