Nvidia became the world’s most valuable company in June 2024 during the generative-AI boom.
Nvidia’s market capitalization briefly moved above Microsoft and Apple in June 2024 as investors increased their expectations for demand for its accelerated-computing products. Its graphics-processing units, or GPUs, are central hardware for many artificial-intelligence data centers.
The company is commonly described as a chip designer rather than a traditional chip manufacturer. Nvidia designs processors and software platforms, while much of its advanced manufacturing is carried out by outside foundries, especially Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company.
Nvidia began in 1993 and first became famous for graphics technology used in personal computers and video games. Its CUDA software platform and data-center products later helped it become a major supplier for machine learning and generative AI.
