Which chip designer became the first company primarily known for graphics processors to surpass a US$3 trillion market capitalization?

The story behind the answer

Nvidia became the first company primarily known for graphics processors to surpass a US$3 trillion market capitalization.

Nvidia crossed the US$3 trillion mark in June 2024 as demand for its data-center accelerators surged. Investors viewed the company as a major supplier of the computing hardware used to train and run artificial-intelligence systems.

Nvidia was founded in 1993 by Jensen Huang, Chris Malachowsky, and Curtis Priem. It originally focused on graphics processing units, or GPUs, for computer games. GPUs later became valuable for scientific computing and machine-learning workloads because they can perform many calculations in parallel.

The company’s market value rose rapidly as cloud providers and technology companies invested in AI infrastructure. Nvidia’s stock split ten-for-one in June 2024, changing the per-share price without changing the company’s overall market capitalization by itself.
