Broadcom acquired VMware in 2023 in a deal valued at about $69 billion.
The acquisition was completed on November 22, 2023, after regulatory review in several jurisdictions. VMware was known for virtualization software that lets organizations run multiple virtual machines on a single physical server. Broadcom said the purchase would strengthen its infrastructure-software business.
Broadcom’s modern corporate history includes the 2016 acquisition of the original Broadcom Corporation by Avago Technologies. The combined company adopted the Broadcom name and became a major supplier of semiconductors for networking, broadband, storage, and wireless communications.
Broadcom is sometimes confused with the earlier Broadcom Corporation because the corporate lineage is complicated. Avago Technologies was the acquiring company in 2016, while Broadcom Inc. was the resulting parent. The VMware transaction was much later and involved software rather than a semiconductor manufacturer.
