Tencent owns WeChat and trades on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange under ticker 0700.
Tencent was founded in Shenzhen in 1998 by Ma Huateng and several co-founders. Its first major product was an instant-messaging service called QQ. The company later built a broad ecosystem spanning social media, digital payments, online games, music, video, advertising, and cloud services.
WeChat launched in 2011 and became one of Tencent's most important products. In China it is used for messaging, payments, public accounts, commerce, and many other daily activities.
Tencent's Hong Kong ticker is commonly written as 0700 or 700. Hong Kong-listed shares and American depositary receipts in the United States are different securities, so their symbols and trading venues should not be treated as interchangeable.
