Which Chinese technology company owns WeChat and Riot Games?

The story behind the answer

Tencent owns WeChat and Riot Games.

Tencent was founded in Shenzhen in 1998 by Ma Huateng and other co-founders. Its early success came from QQ, an instant-messaging service that helped build a large online community in China. Tencent later developed and invested across social media, games, payments, cloud services, and digital content.

WeChat, known as Weixin in mainland China, combines messaging with social features, payments, media, and other services. Tencent acquired Riot Games, the developer of League of Legends, in stages and became its full owner in 2015. Tencent also holds stakes in other international game companies.

Tencent is not the same company as Alibaba: Alibaba is especially associated with e-commerce and cloud services, while Tencent is strongly associated with social platforms and gaming. Its market value can move with regulation, advertising, gaming performance, and investor sentiment toward Chinese technology companies.
