Tencent owns the WeChat and Weixin messaging platforms.
Tencent launched WeChat in 2011, and the service became a major communication and mobile-services platform in China. In mainland China it is commonly called Weixin, while “WeChat” is the international brand. The app combines messaging with functions such as payments, social feeds, mini programs, and other digital services.
Tencent was founded in 1998 by Ma Huateng, Zhang Zhidong, Xu Cheney, Chen Yidan, and Zeng Liqing. Its earlier success came from QQ, an instant-messaging service that helped Tencent build a large user base. The company later expanded into online games, digital content, advertising, cloud services, and financial technology.
Tencent is often compared with Alibaba, but their core strengths differ. Alibaba is strongly associated with e-commerce platforms and online retail, whereas Tencent is especially associated with social networking, gaming, and digital communication. Tencent’s broad ecosystem and stakes in technology and entertainment businesses have helped it remain one of Asia’s largest companies by market capitalization.
