Tencent operates WeChat and owns the League of Legends developer Riot Games.
Tencent Holdings is a Chinese technology and entertainment company whose businesses include social media, online games, digital content, advertising, fintech, and cloud services. Its size and broad consumer reach have made it one of Asia’s most valuable publicly traded companies by market capitalization.
Tencent launched the instant-messaging service QQ in 1999 and introduced WeChat in 2011. WeChat developed from messaging into a broad platform offering payments, official accounts, mini programs, and other services. Tencent acquired a majority stake in Riot Games in 2011 and later became its sole owner; Riot developed League of Legends.
Tencent is often confused with Alibaba because both are Chinese technology giants. Their core strengths differ: Tencent is especially associated with social platforms and games, while Alibaba is strongly associated with e-commerce and online marketplaces. Both also operate financial and cloud businesses.
