Tencent operates WeChat and owns Tencent Music Entertainment.
Tencent was founded in Shenzhen in 1998 by Pony Ma, Zhang Zhidong, Xu Cheney, Chen Yidan, and Zeng Liqing. Its early success came from QQ, an instant-messaging service that became widely used in China.
WeChat launched in 2011 and developed from messaging into a broader platform with payments, social features, mini programs, and other services. Tencent also operates online games, provides cloud services, and holds stakes in many technology and entertainment companies.
Tencent Music Entertainment is a separately listed affiliate focused on music services. It is therefore more precise to say Tencent owns or controls a major interest in the music business, rather than treating Tencent Music as identical to the parent company.
