Tencent operates WeChat and owns a major stake in Epic Games.
WeChat is Tencent’s widely used messaging and services platform. It supports chat, voice and video calls, payments, official accounts, mini programs, and other services. The app is known as Weixin in mainland China, although WeChat is the international brand name.
Tencent acquired a controlling interest in Epic Games in 2012. Epic is the developer of Fortnite, Unreal Engine, and other games. Tencent also operates a large online-gaming business and holds investments in several entertainment and technology companies.
Tencent was founded in Shenzhen in 1998 by Ma Huateng and other co-founders. Its broad mix of social media, gaming, advertising, fintech, and cloud services has made it one of the world’s largest companies by market capitalization, although its ranking changes with market conditions.
