Which Chinese technology company operates WeChat and is listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange?

The story behind the answer

Tencent operates WeChat and is listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.

Tencent launched WeChat in 2011, and the app developed into a broad communications and services platform used for messaging, payments, social networking, media, and other digital activities. In mainland China, WeChat is known as Weixin, while WeChat is the international name.

Tencent became one of the world’s most valuable publicly traded companies through a diversified technology business. Its activities include online games, digital content, cloud services, advertising, and financial-technology services. Its large user base and broad ecosystem have made it a particularly important company in China’s internet economy.

Tencent was founded in Shenzhen in 1998 by five entrepreneurs, including Ma Huateng, who is commonly known as Pony Ma. The company’s shares have traded in Hong Kong since 2004. Tencent is sometimes confused with Alibaba because both are major Chinese technology groups, but Alibaba is more strongly associated with e-commerce while Tencent is especially associated with communications and gaming.
