Which Chinese technology company, founded in 1998, trades in Hong Kong under stock code 700?

The story behind the answer

Tencent is the Chinese technology company founded in 1998 that trades in Hong Kong under stock code 700.

Tencent was founded in Shenzhen in November 1998 by five people, including Ma Huateng, also known as Pony Ma. Its early product, QQ, became one of China’s best-known instant-messaging services. Tencent later developed or operated WeChat, games, digital-content services, advertising, fintech, and cloud-computing businesses.

Tencent Holdings Limited is listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange under the code 700. WeChat, known in China as Weixin, became a broad platform combining messaging, payments, social features, and other services. Tencent is also a major global videogame investor and publisher.

Stock code 700 is not the same as an American ticker symbol. Tencent also trades in the United States through an over-the-counter American depositary receipt under TCEHY. Its market capitalization fluctuates with the Hong Kong share price and the exchange rate.
