Which Chinese technology company developed WeChat, the multipurpose messaging and payments app launched in 2011?

The story behind the answer

Tencent developed WeChat, the multipurpose messaging and payments app launched in 2011.

Tencent was founded in Shenzhen in 1998 by Ma Huateng and other co-founders. Its early success came from QQ, an instant-messaging service that became widely used in China. Tencent later expanded into online games, digital content, advertising, cloud services, and financial technology.

WeChat began as a mobile messaging service called Weixin in China. It added voice messaging, social feeds, mini programs, digital payments, and business tools, turning it into a broad platform rather than a simple chat application. Outside China, the product is generally known as WeChat.

Tencent is sometimes confused with Alibaba because both are major Chinese technology companies. Alibaba is especially associated with e-commerce and cloud computing, whereas Tencent is strongly associated with social networking, gaming, and WeChat. Tencent’s diverse businesses and large user base have supported its status as one of Asia’s most valuable publicly traded companies.
