Which Chinese green tea is named Dragon Well in English? Longjing is the Chinese green tea known in English as Dragon Well tea.
Longjing is a pan-roasted green tea from the Hangzhou area of Zhejiang Province, especially the villages and plantations around West Lake. The Chinese name 龍井 means “Dragon Well,” referring to the well near Longjing Village. The tea is one of China’s traditionally recognized Famous Teas and is also sold under spellings such as Lung Ching.
Unlike black and oolong teas, Longjing undergoes minimal oxidation. Fresh leaves are heated in pans soon after picking, stopping oxidation and producing its characteristic flat, smooth shape. High-quality examples are often described as mellow, sweet, vegetal, or reminiscent of roasted chestnut. The finest harvests use very young shoots and leaves.
“Longjing” can refer broadly to tea made in the style, but stricter usage distinguishes West Lake Longjing from teas grown elsewhere. Counterfeit or mislabelled examples are common because tea from other Chinese provinces may be processed to resemble the Hangzhou style. The name therefore identifies both a tea tradition and, in its most prized form, a protected regional origin.
