Which Chinese dynasty was founded by Kublai Khan?
Answer
Yuan dynasty
Answer
Yuan dynasty
Kublai Khan founded the Yuan dynasty. He proclaimed the dynastic name Great Yuan in 1271 and became its first emperor, ruling until his death in 1294.
Kublai was the grandson of Genghis Khan and the second son of Tolui. After succeeding his brother Möngke as Mongol grand khan in 1260, he fought a civil war against his younger brother Ariq Böke. The conflict helped divide the wider Mongol Empire, while Kublai consolidated power in China.
The Yuan conquest of the Southern Song was completed in 1279, making Kublai the first non-Han ruler to control all of China proper. He established Dadu—modern Beijing—as the dynasty’s main capital, while Shangdu, or Xanadu, served as his summer capital.
The Yuan dynasty lasted until 1368, when it was overthrown by the Ming. The Qing, Song, and Ming were separate dynasties, founded by different rulers and ruling China in different periods.
