What is the name of the ancient Chinese military treatise written by Sun Bin?
Answer
Sun Bin's Art of War
Answer
Sun Bin's Art of War
The ancient Chinese military treatise written by Sun Bin is Sun Bin’s Art of War. Its Chinese title is Sun Bin bingfa, and it is a distinct work from Sun Tzu’s better-known The Art of War.
Sun Bin lived during the Warring States period and served as a strategist for the state of Qi. Historical tradition says he was betrayed by Pang Juan, branded and crippled, then escaped to Qi. He later advised commanders in the victories at Guiling and Maling, including the famous strategy of attacking Wei to relieve Zhao.
The treatise was long believed lost after the Han dynasty. In 1972, bamboo-slip manuscripts unearthed at Yinqueshan in Shandong revealed substantial portions of it. Han sources attributed 89 chapters and four volumes of illustrations to the original, while the modern reconstructed edition contains 16 chapters. Its discussions include formations, logistics, terrain, training, deception, and siege warfare—topics that distinguish it from Sun Tzu’s text.
