Which Chinese dynasty ruled for the longest period?
Answer
Zhou dynasty
Answer
Zhou dynasty
The Zhou dynasty ruled for the longest period in Chinese history. It lasted from about 1046 BCE to 256 BCE—roughly 789 years—longer than any other Chinese dynasty.
The Zhou defeated the Shang at the Battle of Muye and introduced the idea of the Mandate of Heaven: the belief that a ruler governed legitimately only while ruling well. This concept shaped Chinese political thought for centuries.
Zhou history is usually divided into the Western Zhou, which lasted until 771 BCE, and the Eastern Zhou, which continued until the dynasty’s final fall. During the later period, royal authority weakened while rival states competed in the Spring and Autumn and Warring States eras.
A common mix-up is assuming the Zhou controlled a unified empire continuously for eight centuries. Their direct power declined substantially, and many regional states operated almost independently before Qin finally eliminated the Zhou court.
