Which Chinese dynasty is known for its oracle bones and bronze vessels?

The story behind the answer

The Shang dynasty is known for its oracle bones and bronze vessels.

The Shang ruled much of northern China from about 1600 to 1046 BCE. Their capital near present-day Anyang became the source of thousands of inscribed ox scapulae and turtle shells. Shang diviners heated these objects until they cracked, then interpreted the patterns to answer questions about harvests, warfare, weather, royal health, and religious offerings.

The inscriptions are among the earliest substantial examples of written Chinese and include characters recognizable as ancestors of modern Chinese script. Shang bronze vessels served ritual and political purposes, especially ceremonies honoring ancestors. Their elaborate designs and inscriptions also displayed the authority of the royal house.

A common mix-up is confusing the Shang with the Zhou, who conquered them around 1046 BCE. The Zhou continued some Shang religious and bronze traditions, but the combination of oracle-bone archives and distinctive ritual bronzes is especially characteristic of the Shang.
