Which Chinese dynasty built the most famous sections of the Great Wall?

The story behind the answer

The Ming dynasty built the most famous sections of the Great Wall of China. Although many dynasties contributed to the wider wall system, the brick-and-stone stretches most visitors recognize today are largely Ming-era defenses.

The Ming dynasty ruled China from 1368 to 1644. After repeated conflicts with Mongol groups to the north, Ming rulers invested heavily in frontier fortifications, watchtowers, gates and signal systems. Construction and rebuilding continued for centuries, especially near the capital and strategically important passes.

The Qin dynasty is often linked with the Great Wall because Qin Shi Huang connected earlier regional walls in the third century BCE. However, much of that early work used rammed earth and has not survived in the dramatic form commonly pictured.

Popular tourist sections such as Badaling, Mutianyu and Jinshanling are associated with Ming construction or restoration. The Great Wall is therefore not one single structure from one period, but an immense defensive network developed over many centuries.
