BYD is the Chinese company founded by Wang Chuanfu that became a major producer of electric vehicles and batteries.
Wang Chuanfu founded BYD in Shenzhen in 1995. The company initially specialized in rechargeable batteries, supplying products for consumer electronics before expanding into automobiles and other transportation technologies.
BYD entered the automotive industry after acquiring Qinchuan Machinery Works in 2003. It later developed plug-in hybrids, battery-electric cars, buses, and commercial vehicles. Its battery expertise became a central part of its vehicle strategy.
BYD is sometimes expanded as “Build Your Dreams,” a marketing phrase used by the company. The business name is generally written as BYD, and it is distinct from NIO, Geely, and other Chinese vehicle manufacturers.
