PetroChina became the first Asian company to reach a $1 trillion market capitalization in 2007.
PetroChina’s shares surged on their first day of trading in Shanghai in November 2007, briefly giving the company a market value above $1 trillion. The event occurred near the height of China’s stock-market boom and attracted global attention.
PetroChina is the listed arm of China National Petroleum Corporation, one of China’s major state-owned energy groups. Its valuation reflected expectations about China’s expanding economy and demand for oil and gas, although the share price later fell substantially.
The milestone is a useful reminder that market capitalization can be highly sensitive to trading conditions. PetroChina’s brief trillion-dollar ranking should not be confused with its long-term financial value or with Alibaba’s later prominence in Chinese technology.
