Which chemical element has the symbol Ag?

The story behind the answer

The chemical element with the symbol Ag is silver.

Silver is a lustrous transition metal with atomic number 47. Its symbol comes from the Latin word argentum, which explains why the abbreviation does not resemble the English name. Silver has been valued for ornaments, coins and decorative objects for thousands of years.

Among the elements, silver has the highest electrical conductivity and the highest thermal conductivity. It also reflects visible light effectively, although its surface can tarnish when sulfur compounds form silver sulfide.

Silver is used in electrical contacts, mirrors, solar panels, jewelry and some antimicrobial applications. It should not be confused with platinum, which is also a precious metal, or with silver-colored materials such as aluminum. The phrase “sterling silver” generally refers to an alloy containing 92.5% silver by mass.
