Nicolas Anelka missed Chelsea’s final penalty in the 2008 UEFA Champions League shoot-out.
The final was played on 21 May 2008 at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium. Manchester United and Chelsea drew 1–1 after extra time, with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring for United and Frank Lampard equalising. United eventually won the shoot-out 6–5.
Chelsea’s decisive final attempt came in sudden death. After Ryan Giggs scored United’s seventh penalty, Anelka took Chelsea’s seventh kick, but Edwin van der Sar saved it. That save ended the shoot-out and delivered United their third European Cup.
John Terry is often remembered instead because he missed Chelsea’s potential winning fifth penalty. Terry slipped as he planted his standing foot, and his effort hit the post. However, that was not the shoot-out’s final kick: Anelka’s saved attempt came later. Didier Drogba had also been sent off late in extra time, so he was unavailable to take Chelsea’s scheduled fifth penalty.
