Which charging connector is commonly called the Japanese CHAdeMO standard?

The story behind the answer

CHAdeMO is the Japanese-origin fast-charging connector and charging standard.

The name CHAdeMO is associated with a high-power direct-current charging system developed for battery-electric vehicles. It was promoted by Japanese companies including Tokyo Electric Power Company, Toyota, Nissan, Mitsubishi, and Subaru.

CHAdeMO uses a dedicated connector for DC charging, while many other systems combine alternating-current charging contacts with additional DC pins. The standard became especially visible on early Nissan Leaf and Mitsubishi i-MiEV models, which helped establish it internationally.

CHAdeMO is often confused with a plug shape alone, but it also describes communication and charging specifications. In Europe and North America, CCS later became more widespread on many new vehicles, while CHAdeMO remained important on numerous earlier EVs and charging stations.
