Which charge card, launched in 1950, became the world’s first widely used payment card?

The story behind the answer

Diners Club became the world’s first widely used payment card when it launched in 1950.

The card grew from a New York dining-payment experiment created by Frank McNamara, Ralph Schneider, and Matty Simmons. It initially allowed members to charge meals at participating restaurants and settle one monthly bill.

Unlike modern revolving credit cards, the original Diners Club card was a charge card: cardholders generally had to pay the balance in full. Its early success demonstrated that a payment network could connect consumers, merchants, and a central billing organization.

BankAmericard followed in 1958 and helped popularize revolving credit. It later became Visa. American Express also entered the card market, but it did not launch the first widely used payment card. Diners Club remains an important milestone in the history of consumer payments.
