Which character was McDonald’s original mascot before Ronald McDonald appeared?

The story behind the answer

Speedee was McDonald’s original mascot before Ronald McDonald appeared.

Speedee debuted in 1948, when McDonald’s was still developing the fast-service restaurant system created by brothers Richard and Maurice McDonald. The character was drawn as a small chef with a hamburger-shaped head and was used to represent speed and efficient service.

The name connected directly with the brothers’ “Speedee Service System,” introduced at their San Bernardino, California, restaurant in 1948. That system emphasized a limited menu, standardized preparation, and rapid customer service. Speedee therefore promoted both the restaurant and its operating method.

Ronald McDonald gradually replaced Speedee as the company’s best-known character after his introduction in 1963. Speedee did not disappear from every historical reference, however: the character remained part of early McDonald’s imagery and is still important to the company’s visual history. Speedee is sometimes confused with later McDonaldland characters, but he predates that entire cast.
