Which character rides the horse Shadowfax in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings?

The story behind the answer

Gandalf rides the horse Shadowfax in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.

Shadowfax is the greatest of the horses of Rohan and belongs to the line of horses descended from Felaróf, the first of the Mearas. The horse is extraordinarily fast, intelligent, and able to understand human speech, although Tolkien does not present him as a talking character.

King Théoden gives Shadowfax to Gandalf after the wizard’s release from Orthanc. Gandalf rides him during urgent journeys, including the ride to Minas Tirith and the return from Isengard. Their speed helps communicate warnings and gather allies during the War of the Ring.

Shadowfax is sometimes confused with Brego, the horse ridden by Aragorn in the films. Brego is a separate horse and is not Shadowfax.
