Frodo Baggins receives the One Ring from Bilbo Baggins in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.
Bilbo had found the Ring during the events of The Hobbit, when he encountered Gollum beneath the Misty Mountains. Decades later, at the end of his eleventy-first birthday party, Bilbo leaves the Shire and gives the Ring to Frodo, his younger cousin and adopted heir.
Gandalf eventually determines that Bilbo’s harmless-looking ring is actually the One Ring forged by Sauron. Frodo accepts the task of carrying it away from the Shire and eventually volunteers to take it to Mordor, where it can be destroyed in Mount Doom.
Samwise Gamgee becomes Frodo’s closest companion on the journey, but he is not the original recipient from Bilbo. Merry and Pippin are also members of the Fellowship, yet neither receives the Ring from Bilbo. This family connection is one of the story’s most important early plot points.
