Mater is Lightning McQueen's best friend in Pixar's Cars movies.
Mater is a rusty tow truck from Radiator Springs. He meets Lightning in the first Cars film and develops a close friendship with him despite their very different personalities. Mater is cheerful, loyal, impulsive, and proud of his large collection of tall tales.
The character is voiced by Larry the Cable Guy, the stage name of comedian Daniel Lawrence Whitney. Mater's design was inspired partly by a real-world 1951 International Harvester boom truck that production designer Jay Shuster saw in Oklahoma, along with other old tow trucks.
Mater has a much larger role in Cars 2, where his misunderstanding of spy activity drives the plot. He also appears in Cars 3 and in the animated series Mater's Tall Tales. His catchphrase “Git-R-Done” connects the character with Larry the Cable Guy's comedy persona.
