Which character is known as the rightful king of Gondor in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings?

The story behind the answer

Aragorn is the character known as the rightful king of Gondor in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.

For much of the story, Aragorn travels under the name Strider and presents himself as a Ranger of the North. He is descended from Isildur and therefore has a claim to the thrones of Gondor and Arnor, although he does not immediately announce his royal identity.

Aragorn’s path combines kingship, military leadership, healing, and the protection of the Ring-bearer. After Sauron’s defeat, he is crowned King Elessar and begins the restoration of the reunited kingdoms.

Boromir and Faramir are important men of Gondor, while Denethor is its ruling steward during the War of the Ring. None of them is the heir whose kingship is restored at the end.
