Which character is David Brent's immediate superior in Series 1?

The story behind the answer

Jennifer Taylor-Clarke is David Brent’s immediate superior in Series 1 of The Office (UK).

Played by Stirling Gallacher, Jennifer is Wernham Hogg’s regional manager and David’s boss during the first series. She visits the Slough branch to monitor the proposed downsizing and to assess David’s handling of the office, but his improvised schemes repeatedly test her patience.

Jennifer’s authority is especially clear in “Work Experience,” when she instructs David to deal with the offensive image circulating around the office. David tries to appear decisive, but Jennifer exposes his evasiveness when she discovers that he has called the speaking clock instead of Chris Finch.

At the end of Series 1, Jennifer is made a partner in the firm. That promotion changes the management structure: Neil Godwin becomes David’s immediate superior in Series 2. Gareth Keenan is David’s assistant, while Chris Finch is merely a colleague and Neil has not yet replaced Jennifer as David’s boss during Series 1.
