Which character is a professional golfer?

The story behind the answer

Jordan Baker is the professional golfer in The Great Gatsby.

Jordan is Daisy Buchanan’s friend and Nick Carraway’s romantic interest for part of the novel. She is introduced as a successful young golfer whose public reputation gives her a degree of independence and celebrity in 1920s society.

Her athletic career also reveals a less admirable side. Jordan is rumored to have cheated during a tournament, and the suspicion damages her reputation. Nick describes her as habitually dishonest, linking her questionable conduct on the golf course with the evasions and moral carelessness that characterize the novel’s privileged social world.

Jordan is sometimes confused with Daisy or Myrtle because all three women belong to the novel’s central social and romantic network. Unlike Daisy, she is not primarily defined by marriage or motherhood; unlike Myrtle, she is associated with wealth, mobility, and the modern flapper culture represented by competitive sports and greater freedom for women. Fitzgerald based Jordan partly on amateur golf champion Edith Cummings.
