Which character inherits Bilbo’s ring in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings?

The story behind the answer

Frodo Baggins inherits Bilbo’s ring in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.

Bilbo gives the ring to Frodo during his eleventy-first birthday celebration and departure from the Shire. Gandalf later investigates the ring and discovers that it is the One Ring, created by Sauron to control the other Rings of Power.

Frodo’s inheritance begins the central quest of the novel. He leaves Hobbiton with Samwise Gamgee and eventually joins the Fellowship of the Ring. The mission is to carry the ring to Mount Doom in Mordor, where it can be destroyed.

Readers sometimes remember Sam as the ring-bearer because Sam carries the ring briefly after Shelob’s attack. Frodo, however, is the principal bearer for most of the story. Bilbo was the previous long-term bearer, having found the ring during the events of The Hobbit.
