Beyoncé voiced Nala in Disney’s 2019 computer-animated remake of The Lion King.
Nala is Simba’s childhood friend who becomes his partner and queen after he returns to Pride Rock. Beyoncé joined a voice cast that included Donald Glover as Simba, James Earl Jones as Mufasa, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar, and Alfre Woodard as Sarabi.
The remake was directed by Jon Favreau and uses photorealistic computer-generated imagery rather than traditional live-action animal filming. It retells the story of Disney’s 1994 animated film while retaining many of its songs and central characters.
Beyoncé also contributed new music to the project, including “Spirit,” and curated the companion album The Lion King: The Gift. Nala is distinct from Sarabi, Simba’s mother, and Kiara, who appears in the sequel The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride.
