Manuel is the character who constantly mispronounces “Fawlty Towers.” The well-meaning Spanish waiter, played by Andrew Sachs, has only a limited grasp of English and frequently mangles words, names and instructions while working at Basil Fawlty’s hotel.
Manuel’s mistakes are central to the sitcom’s misunderstandings. He comes from Barcelona and is proud of the English he has learned, even though his pronunciation and comprehension often cause chaos. Basil repeatedly blames Manuel’s confusion on his origins, using the familiar excuse, “He’s from Barcelona.”
The language gag extends beyond the hotel’s name. Manuel mispronounces “cholesterol” as “costellorol,” struggles to spell “sleep,” and often misunderstands Basil’s hurried orders. His confusion is not entirely linguistic: the scripts also portray him as disorganised and rather dim, which creates additional comic problems.
Andrew Sachs was actually born in Germany and lived there until he was eight, but he created Manuel’s famous Spanish accent for the role. In some foreign-language versions, the character’s nationality was changed to preserve the joke for local audiences.
