Which character becomes Lightning McQueen's trainee in Pixar's Cars 3?

Cruz Ramirez becomes Lightning McQueen's trainee and later racing partner in Pixar's Cars 3.

Cruz begins the film as a high-performance trainer at the Rust-eze Racing Center. She is enthusiastic about modern training methods but has not pursued a professional racing career herself. Lightning initially sees her as part of a system that could replace older racers, yet their relationship changes during a cross-country training journey.

As Cruz gains confidence, Lightning recognizes that she has the speed, skill, and desire to compete. He gives her the opportunity to race in his place during the Florida 500. Cruz wins the event, while Lightning adopts a mentor role and continues racing in a supporting capacity.

Cruz's arc gives Cars 3 a generational theme: experience remains valuable, but the future also needs opportunities for new competitors. She is voiced by Cristela Alonzo. Her yellow design and racing number 51 distinguish her from Lightning's familiar red number 95.
